Design: Happy New Year Artist: Esther Aarts Inspiration: It was about time for Esther Aarts to do something really Cuckoo! Who to send it to: A fine fräulein with time on her side or a handsome herr with just a minute to spare. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: Perhaps it's a sign of the times, but the grandfather clock design felt little old and tired. Favorite detail: How fun to ring in the new year swinging on a pendulum! Why letterpress? Like other handiwork from German engineers, our Heidelberg presses run like clockwork for years and years!

Don’t forget to post your comment and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Now for this week’s cozy card:

Design: Cozy Gifts Artist: Eunice Moyle Inspiration: We wool-gathered about it a while and when it came down to keeping warm and giving thanks, we needed a card that covered a cornucopia of comfort. Who to send it to: Maybe someone who's wise to your size and style and has been gifting you long johns and long socks for a long while. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: The "Snuggie Calisthenics" card lacked the necessary je ne sais quois. Favorite detail: We love anything and anyone with long johns on. Why letterpress? Letterpress makes those snowflakes extra crisp.

Who to send it to: A certain Semite who's got a soft spot for silly & sweet seasonal stationery. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one:  We were thinking of a plate of potato pancakes leaping into a pan of olive oil and calling it Hello!Latke-- but that dimly lit candle got "shamashed" out in a jiffy. Favorite detail: Definitely the enigmatic "Yea!" on the flag. Why letterpress? Wait'll you see how great those dreidels look-- letterpress is the tops!

Who to send it to: Some seasonal songbirds, an alto owl, a soprano sparrow, a mezzo mouse, or a baritone bear. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: "Troll the Ancient Yuletide Carol" with a bunch of trolls in holiday garb was a little too Charles Addams-y. Favorite detail: The songbooks are in British English. Shout out to H!L UK! Why letterpress? All our woodland friends (and spirit animals) appreciate the sustainable papers and print methods we use in our letterpress cards.

Design: Christmastime Artist: Esther Aarts Inspiration: Everything old, new, red, white, icy blue and beautiful about Christmas. Who to send it to: Anyone— everyone on your list! Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: The festivus version's feats of strength were funny, but it was a little tricky to illustrate the airing of grievances. Favorite detail: The sinuous snow covered branch on which the sparrows sit. Why letterpress: The color on the little birds heads are pressed with 2 translucent inks, creating a 3rd color. Nifty, huh?

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: A bunch of naïve, outsider art renderings of folk instruments reading "Close enough for folk music!" Another with a just big acorn, reading "Wanna hear acorny joke?" Favorite detail: We heart the squirrel love. Why Letterpress? Dingbats/Typographic ornaments are sometimes called "printer's flowers." Design: Skull & Crossbones Artist: Eunice Moyle Inspiration: We were playing Ouija one night and the spirit told us that oui and ja both mean "yes." Creeeeepy. Who to send it to: A Jolly Roger, a femme fatale, or a slightly sinister sister. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: "We put the 'gal' in gallows humor." Actually, we're still working on that one. Favorite detail: We like how the different sized eyes make all the difference in the skulls' spookiness. Why letterpress? Because the spirit spelled it out for us. Oui. Ja. Yes. L-E-T-T-E-R-P-R-E-S-S. I swear, I wasn't pushing.

Now for this week’s spooky selection:

trick_or_treat

Design: Trick or Treat Artist: Lab Partners Inspiration:  A tiny town teeming with teeny trick-or-treaters was just too tempting not to attempt. Who to send it to: a petite pirate, a diminutive Dracula, a wee werewolf, a smallish skeleton or an itty-bitty kitty. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: We thought the college version, with kids dressed as showers, laundry baskets and zombie sorority girls was a little too hard to communicate at that scale. Favorite Detail: Who could name just one? But we delight in saying that there really is a devil in the details.

Don’t forget to post your comment, and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Now for this week's spooky selection:

Skeleton_Fiesta

Design: Skeleton Fiesta Artist: Eunice Moyle Inspiration: Cleaning a closet full of vintage souvenirs we found some spooky sugar skulls and thought we ought not just let our calaveras out of the closet, but give them maracas and let them party! Who to send it to: Any guy, ghoul or witch with whom you have a funny bone to pick. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: An archaeology-themed romantic Halloween card reading "I Dig Your Bones" gave us the shudders, and our "Happy Howl- a-Ween" card with an "Owl-len Ginsberg" cartoon reading from HOWL— never mind— forget we ever said that. Favorite detail: The fact that the itsy-bitsy spider is depicted with all 28375764 of its eyes makes us cringe with ghoulish glee. Why letterpress? Nothing else could quite capture all the crisply creepy detail.

Don’t forget to post your comment, and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Now for this week’s edition:

going_places

Design: Going Places
Artist: Julia Rothman
Inspiration: Lugging vintage luggage is a sport in our field, inspiring awe in good design—particularly with regards to such brilliant notions as the invention of the wheel.
Who to send it to: A jet-setter, a globe-trotter, a glad new grad, a Fulbright scholar...
Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: A little dog packing a too small satchel with a too big bone reading "Bone Voyage." A two toed sloth climbing a tree, reading "Movin' on Up!"

We’ll choose THREE LUCKY WINNERS to get a free card.  Post a comment by 12 p.m. PST the following Thursday, and we’ll announce the winners on the following Friday!

Back from our brief hiatus, here is this week's card:

julia_rothman_robots

Design: Robots Artist: Julia Rothman Inspiration: Witnessing a short circuit crash our batteries-not-included Roomba into our computer desk gave us a deep thought. Who to send it to: Any humanoid named Rosie, Wally or particularly Marvin; or a hot bot with a birthday in the distant future— the year 2000. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: We let the paranoid android jokes go the way of the difference engine, and the strangely risqué robot card reading "Byte Me" obsolesced faster than the Tandy. Favorite Detail: Love the little K-9. And the Bohr model balloon fills us with nuclear age nostalgia. Why Letterpress? Such futuristic subject matter requires equally futuristic print technology.

Don’t forget to post your comment, and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!
