The Best of NSS, Part 2

Hey peeps! It's time for more goodies from this years National Stationery Show (click here to see Part 1). First up is the amazing work from 1 Canoe 2 (above and below): 3 talented girls who draw, design and letterpress print in a barn in Missouri. Living the dream.

Making their NSS debut this year was Los Angeles based The Social Type (below). I love how the same sentiment can be interpreted in many different ways!

Another favorite of mine was Banquet Atelier & Workshop, based in Vancouver. Our mutual love of neon was obvious:

How incredible is their guest sign (below)? I'm loving their prints also.

My favorite birthday card of the show came from Anemone Letterpress (below). So clever!

Stay tuned for part 3!

The Best of NSS, Part 1

This year we didn't have a booth at the National Stationery Show but our New York satellite office (aka Design Director Shauna Leytus) was there visiting some of our favorite artists and making new friends. She'll be doing a series of posts recapping what she saw and loved. Here's her first post!

Where do I begin?! There was so much amazing work at the National Stationery Show this year from new comers and old favorites. Making her NSS debut, Left Field cards (above) showcased nine letterpressed "baseball cards" complete with mustaches, edibles and bizarre injuries. Collect them all!

One of my favorite cards of the entire show belonged to Red Camper (above and below). Need I say more?

A fellow card maker sharing a love of food-themed imagery was Fox Tail Press (above and below). When I asked when "national spaghetti day" actually was, Danielle rightly answered "everyday". Duh.

Design*Sponge declared Linda & Harriet's over-sized Quilt Calender the best thing she saw at the show and I couldn't agree more. My photos do not do it justice - this is a work of art and it is amazing.

More coverage of the show to come!

Hello!Lucky B Sides & a Giveaway

We think one of the most delightful things about our greeting cards is the fact that the design often continues to the back of the card.

It's a fun little surprise you find when you hold one of our cards in your hands. And since only the front sides of our cards are shown online people often don't get to see this fun little party on the back. So here are some rarely photographed back sides of our cards. We're sharing some brand new designs along with a couple old favorites.

Another signature Hello!Lucky card trait is anthropomorphizing food, which we're big fans of around here. We've got dancing deviled eggs, talking pancakes, and laughing champagne bottles. Tell us which food you'd like to see come to life next and we'll send one lucky commenter 3 of our new cards! We'll pick a winner this Friday, May 18th.

Cards in order of appearance: Happy New Year's Eve, Yeti Love, Animal Parade, BBQ Parade.

Lucky Friday # 63, Go Wild!

Hello all you lucky folks out there! This is the 63rd edition of our Lucky Friday Giveaway.  Each Friday we feature one of our letterpress greeting cards. We’ll choose THREE LUCKY WINNERS to get a free card.  Post a comment by 12 p.m. PST the following Thursday, and we’ll announce the winners on the following Friday!

The three winners from last week are (drum roll, please): Laura H, Angela, and Ana Laura de Romero! We’ll contact you next week to arrange sending your Going Places card.

Design: Go Wild Artist: Julia Rothman Inspiration: We were wool-gathering for a while, and though the idea was a little fuzzy at first, we eventually found it had teeth. Who to send it to: Someone's who's packin' pachyderm, who's a giraffe-and-a-half or who's the ostrich with the mostrich. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: "Let's Get Domestic" was a cute design, but we didn't feel like it was going anywhere. Favorite Detail: Why, all the animals have de-tails, so how can we choose our favorite of de-tails? Why letterpress? Animals all make such interesting prints, we figured we'd use a heavyweight press method for all our animal champs.

Don’t forget to post your comment and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

New Greeting Cards!

Our brand new letterpress greeting cards are hot off the presses and arrived just in time for spring! We've got smashing new designs by Esther Aarts, Julia Rothman, and yours truly. We've taken a new spin off our popular BBQ Parade Father's Day card and created Thanks a Brunch, and Julia's Better With Age card speaks simply the truth - we are especially fond of this card being so close to wine country!

Our wedding Skyline series is such a hit we couldn't wait to offer letterpress skyline cards for all our favorite cities! San Francisco, New York City, and London are all available now but there are more to come! Also making it's big debut is our bright and cheerful Visit Seattle card.

Lucky Friday #50, Spring Chicken Birthday Card

Hello all you lucky folks out there! This is the 50th (!) edition of our Lucky Friday Giveaway.  Each Friday we feature one of our letterpress greeting cards. We’ll choose THREE LUCKY WINNERS to get a free card.  Post a comment by 12 p.m. PST the following Thursday, and we’ll announce the winners on the following Friday!

The three winners from last week are (drum roll, please): Stephy-Lou, Phoebe and Lauren C! We’ll contact you next week to arrange sending your Biggest Fan card!

Design: Spring Chicken Artist: Eunice Moyle Inspiration: We trimmed our quills and made a lot of chicken scratch before we hatched this one. Who to send it to: Even though Punxsutawney Phil disagreed yesterday— send it to the wise bird who knows spring is just around the corner, and that we're all in the full bloom of our youth. Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: Another poultry card featuring a turkey— "Wattle I Do Without You?"— we agreed was little too wistful and weird. And the "I'm Too Chicken to Say I Love You," was a bit too heavy to get off the ground. Favorite detail: Chickens always look surprised, don't they? Why letterpress? All the better for the fine feathers and flourishes.

Don’t forget to post your comment and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Circus Fever

Document1

It's no secret that we love everything circus. We find timeless inspiration from the peppy colorways and the wild patterns, especially when we find one of a kind vintage circus themed items, like this fabric (above via Cherry Tomato).

circus

The images inside Circus Alphabet from Whitman Tell-A-Tale-Books are packed with hilarious illustrations of the circus days of the 1950s. We can only imagine the excitement of such a fantastic event!

And we can't forget precious Jude's first birthday party invitations and circus party decor!

Inspiration: After consulting the oracle we were thunderstruck with visions of divine design & pierced through the heart with love for letterpress!

Who to send it to: a buddy having a big birthday bacchanal, a femme fatale with a face to sink a thousand ships, or an Adonis with an Achilles heel for fine print.

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: Our "Stoic Stationery" jokes couldn't even crack a smile & we didn't dare even look at using Medusa.

Favorite detail: We're still a little giggly about how Zeus and the Minotaur have the same labyrinthine chest hair.

Why letterpress? Must avoid cause for clash of our Titans of Typesetting.

Don’t forget to post your comment, and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: A menagerie of sweet creatures living on the big rock candy mountain: Chocolate bunnies, peppermint pigs, swedish fish, licorice scotties, jelly babies, gummy bears and... a candy ass?(!)

Favorite detail: We can’t decide if it’s a box of Andes Mints or Turkish delights! And the candy corns and unicorn horns and tootsie rolls and marshmallows and… !!!!

Why Letterpress: Because that's how we print our sweet greeting cards— letterpress is the icing on the cake.

Octo_sailors

Design: Octo Sailors

Artist: Eunice Moyle

Inspiration: A bit of Busby Berkeley birthday stylishly swirly and smiley sailor shenanigans.

Who to send it to: A beloved Octogenarian or perhaps a favored seafarer with a taste for tako.

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: “Here’s lookin’ at you, Squid” with a giant squid’s giant fish-eye was too creepy.

Favorite detail: The overall effect of the pinwheel pattern of poly-podes is pretty octo-riffic.

Why letterpress: Octopi (or octopodes, if you prefer), like pressmen, can do a lot with a little squirt of ink.

Don’t forget to post your comment, and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Darilyn, Sherri N and Brenda Eden!

We’ll contact you early next week to arrange sending your Bundle of Joy card.

Now for this week’s edition:

dinosaurs

Design: Dinosaurs

Artist: Julia Rothman

Inspiration: Big ideas abound when there’s dinosaurs around!

Who to send it to: For a big birthday for a little guy, terrible lizards make for terrific cards.

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one:  A surfer stegosaurus on a card that read “Cretaceous, Dude!” But we realized that was waaay bogus.

Favorite detail: The absence of T-Rex lets a little big guy fill in the big blank with a big roar!

Why letterpress: Dinos left some impressive fossilized prints behind— similarly, our ancient technology will withstand the test of time.

Don’t forget to post your comment, and tune in next week, same time, different stationery, to see if you’ve won!

Inspiration: Catching a wave of New Wave nostalgia, jonesing for some Joan Jett, or blasting Blondie on the boombox.

Who to send it to: A Jem of a friend or a Misfit on your list.

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: Our singer-songwriter version featured a Garfunkel fro wig, a harmonica stand, a tambourine and a pair of Birkenstocks and it read “Happy Folkin’ Birthday.”

Favorite detail: Love that we amped up the palette with some hot pink ink.

Why letterpress? Why guitars, why Chucks, why leather, why letterpress? Dude, because it rocks!

Hello!Lucky featured in French Paper Sample Room!

We use French Paper Construction Cover White Wash for almost all of our trade cards - it's 100% recycled and really makes our inks pop! They've also got a great assortment of colorful envelopes to complement every design. Thanks French!

Now for this week’s edition:

belated_birthday_card

Design: Belated Birthday

Artist: Eunice Moyle

Inspiration: Some things just take a little longer, no? But it's worth it!

Who to send it to: Many will admit to being a little sluggish when it comes to sending snail mail, so send it to a friend who you might have left behind on the snail trail.

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: For a while we had bees on the brain. “To Bee or not to Bee-lated,” with a harried, flustered postal carrier bee was a clunker.

Favorite detail: The back of the card is cute in an ant-ique kind of way. (see below!)

birthday_card_back

Why letterpress? Pressmen are busy as bees setting type with coppers, brasses and slugs! (ooh, pardon for being SO letterpresoteric)

Don’t forget to post your comment and check back next week, same time, same stationery (; D), to see if you’ve won!

Lucky Friday #17! Beer Stein Birthday Cheers!

Hello all you lucky folks out there! This is the seventeenth edition of our Lucky Friday giveaway! Each Friday we feature one of our letterpress cards. We’ll choose THREE LUCKY WINNERS to get a free card.  Post a comment by 12 p.m. PST the following Thursday, and we’ll announce the winners on the following Friday!

The three winners from last week are (drum roll, please):

Jessica Southwick, Dennis Flinsenberg and Michael! Harr harr!

We’ll contact you early next week to aaarange sending your Best Mate card.

Now for this week’s edition:

cheers!

Design: Cheers!

Artist: Esther Aarts

Inspiration: It doesn’t take Einstein to find a good use for a stein. But it takes an Esther Aarts to put such fine steins on such fine stationery.

Who to send it to: Einstein, Lichtenstein, Bernstein— any old stein. Perhaps just a pal who loves pilsner or a fraulein with a fondness for fermentation.  An Oktoberfest birthday would be the absolute best!

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: Longnecks just didn’t have the same flair. And canned beers can’t clink cheers with the same festive finesse.

Favorite detail: Love the steins’ bendy legs and hopsy feet.

Why letterpress? Steins and Heidelbergs go together like sauerbraten and spaetzle.

Don't forget to leave your comment and check back next week to see if you've won!

National Stationery Show: Our favorites!

We saw a ton of inspiring work at this past National Stationery Show, including these cheeky postcards (above) from La Familia Green. We were also pretty smitten with these adorable pencil cases and tea towels from Pie Bird Press:

Our neighbors at Egg Press wowed us with their bold colors and quirky illustrations:

...and fun paper link chains!

Hello Lucky's newest salesperson

Lucky Friday # 12, Birthday Card Giveaway!

The three winners from last week are (drum roll, please):

Melissa, Lisa and Mary!

Heather will contact you early next week to arrange sending your Wallowing Pig card.

Now for this week’s edition, one of our letterpress birthday cards!

wiserweb

Design: Wiser

Artist: Eunice Moyle

Inspiration: Owl tell you when you’re older.

Who to send it to:  The whoo’s whoo on your birthday list—whoo’s on first? Someone wiser than thou, perhaps?  Or someone with whoom you can share your wisdom.

Ideas we scrapped in favor of this one: We had a designer who sketched out a “HAPPY H-OWL-OWEEN from Owllen Ginsberg” card, with a caricature of Allen Ginsberg as a great horned owl, reading from H-OWL. Ummm… yeah. No. We think she was buzzed on Sharpie fumes at the time.

Our favorite detail: The owl in back looks just a little bit mischievous.

Why Letterpress? With such fine-feathered detail, our pressmen get to show off how talon-ted they are!

Be sure to leave your comment, and don't forget to check back next week to see if you've won!
