Weekend in Paris: Part 1

Taxidermy Musee de la Chasse

After two weeks visiting our London office, I nipped away with my family to Paris for the weekend. Paris with two 16 month-olds felt a little daunting at first, but everything turned out beautifully (with the exception of a couple delicious meals that arrived too slowly for a toddler's taste, so were hastily wolfed down!).

Polar Bear Musee de la Chasse

First stop: La Musée de la Chasse et de la Nature. My husband, J., was skeptical given my known obsession with taxidermy, but it proved to be creative, gorgeous, and amusing!

Flower market stall Paris

Strolling around the Marais, we spotted gorgeous fresh flowers from a street vendor...

ie boutique - colorful Indo-European children's clothes and decor created by a Japanese stylist and a French-Nepalese architect.

Boys on La Promenade,jpg

The best part was just to "faire une promenade" around the streets (and boutiques!) of Paris. The evening's dinner (sans petits) was at Le Train Bleu at Gare du Lyon - a gorgeous beaux-arts interior serving traditional French cuisine. A lovely start to the weekend!

Craft night clothing swap!

Pucci-esque Vintage Dress

Eunice and I began hosting a weekly craft night back over a year ago when we were making crafts for her wedding (and, subsequently, researching our book, Handmade Weddings).  From the beginning, it turned out to be a great excuse to drink, eat, and shamelessly girl-talk (oh, and sometimes to craft!).

This week was especially thrilling - our first-ever clothing swap!  While in New York for NSS, I picked up a copy of The Happiness Project at Anthropologie (why were we shopping at an NYC Anthro when there's one just steps from our San Francisco studio, you might ask? The allure is just that inexplicably powerful.) on our way to ABC Kitchen. In the book, Gretchen Rubin describes the exhilaration of purging her closet (among other great tips!).

Confession: I am a vintage clothes hoarder. Half a decade of monthly trips to the Alameda Flea Market have led to packed closet full of vintage frocks from polyester to plaid and everything in between. Each one has such personality, but guess what? I haven't worn most of them in years!

The craft night girls came over at 7:30 and within minutes you could no longer see the living room floor. The stack of pizzas we had ordered sat unopened. People barely even stopped for a sip of wine.

Navy Vintage Dress

Dara ended up being the biggest winner - her retro style and curvaceous figure are perfect for the vintage look.

Red Vintage Dress

Love this quilted Chanel-esque number!

Blue Vintage Dress

Divine frock for summer parties!

At the end of the night, everyone had a few (or a few dozen!) new looks to try. It didn't cost a dime, and the best part is that if we tire of one of our "new" pieces, we can swap them again later!

National Stationery Show: Our favorites!

We saw a ton of inspiring work at this past National Stationery Show, including these cheeky postcards (above) from La Familia Green. We were also pretty smitten with these adorable pencil cases and tea towels from Pie Bird Press:

Its no secret how much we love the Alameda Flea Market, but when we saw the photos of Les Puces from Lia's recent trip to Paris - we were très jaloux indeed! An endless maze of vintage clothes, books, housewares and enough retro packaging and ephemera to make your head spin!

Studio Snapshot: The Collection + A Roadtrip

DSC_0099

We're thrilled to be teaming up with The Collection Event Studio a gorgeous design studio, retail shop and meeting space in downtown Sonoma.  Always up for a mini road trip, we jumped into the car, iced coffee in-hand and took off for wine country!

The girls at The Collection have curated a wonderful assortment of products and vendors and showcase them so beautifully in their space.  Its like a one-stop shop for planning the most perfect rustic chic wedding!

How great is the pattern on these cups and saucers?  Inspiration is everywhere!

Jude's Big Top Birthday: Birthday Cake Banner!

DSC_0104

A slightly tardy post on how make the little flags that topped Mr. Jude's Big Top Birthday Cake (thank you for your patience, dear readers, things have been a little busy here at H!L HQ!)   We thought these little banners were the perfect topper for a circusy cake!  That perfect stripey candle and equally genius napkins found at Shop Sweet Lulu...

Teeny Hand-Blown Bottles

How gorgeous and adorable are these! Hand blown borosilicate glass bottles, made from the same sort of glass as Pyrex and your everyday run-of-the-mill scientific glassware. Amazing!

bottles1

We have a weakness for miniature things anyhow, so we really have a shine on these. Love green glass!

bottles2

bottles3

Lordy! A wine bottle and a teeny Erlenmeyer flask!  The maker is a pro and has a degree in scientific glass blowing, but the work is surprisingly affordable. The etsy shop is called Kivaford. Imagine our surprise! Wouldn't these be fab as wedding favors, for wee bud vases?
