The Weekend Press

We pledged for The Weekend Press's Oakland Illustration Project on Kickstarter and received this awesome kit! A pocket notebook, letterpress coasters, one postcard, and 10 original prints! We are extra excited and a wee bit sentimental over this project because these prints were created with our very own Original Heidelberg Press that we sold to them when we closed up shop in SF. Not only that, but one of our lovely designers Anna Hurley moved on to collaborate with them! We are incredibly supportive of this project not only because of our connection, but because it's a community project that uses a traditional form of craftsmanship, letterpress- our one true love. Learn more about the project here! Here are a few of the prints we received. Styled and shot below by The Weekend Press.

Printing Workshops at SFCB

Interested in learning about letterpress? Want to try your hand at printing on a vintage Vandercook press? The San Francisco Center for the Book is the best place to start. Their talented team has come up with a great lineup of 2013 workshops and they are available for registry now! As owners of a Vandercook and letterpress lovers, we know how fun it is to crank your own prints.

Visit the SFCB online for a list of workshops, or stop by their NEW location at 375 Rhode Island Street (between 16th and 17th Streets) in San Francisco.

Western Editions Kickstarter

Hello all you letterpress lovers! We're super excited to welcome a new member of the San Francisco letterpress family, Western Editions. Started by two fabulous printmakers Erin and Taylor, Western Editions is a local print studio dedicated to providing public workshops and tutorials of the craft of letterpress, and they need your help. They have created a Kickstarter Project in hopes to raise money and support for their new endeavors, and even a dollar helps. If you live in the bay area and have an interest in learning letterpress, or just want to support young artists, send them some love. They've even got some amazing rewards in the mix. There are only 5 more days to donate so be sure to head over to their site now!

On Press: Overprinting

For this year's new trade releases, we are doing a whole mess of overprinting, but Max's registration is super clean. By overprinting one color smack on top of another, we can turn two colors into three, and it looks super cool. But it can be a difficult process that allows no room for error.

On Eunice's new hand-drawn "Thanks A Brunch" card, the overprinted third color outlines the images and is the color of the text. So, even the slightest shift in registration would not go unnoticed.

Max is an exceptional printer, and they look amazing. Great Job!

On Press: Dinosaurs--Printing and Scoring

Finally! This week our 'On Press' video shows Max in the final stages of this three part series chronicling the making of a letterpress greeting card. Here he's at his windmill printing and scoring Julia Rothman's "Dinosaurs" birthday card design. Scoring, also called creasing, helps prevent the paper from cracking, and it also makes the cards easier to fold.

San Francisco Zine Fest

zinefest_sign.jpg We took a trip to Golden Gate Park last weekend to visit the San Francisco Zine Fest. Some of our highlights were handmade books from Newlights Press (and Hello!Lucky printer Aaron Cohick!):

As well as zines from Family Style, and new cards from Motermouth Press:

One of our favorite booths was Pod Post, with their letterpress patch kit - too cute!
