Small Businesses Sticking Together

Last updated April 12, 2020

Covid19_SmallBizOwnersbanner-01.jpg

It’s an understatement to say that this is a tough time for small business owners -- and a time when we need to stick together.  We’ve teamed up with Together (Apart), a small business alliance which gives a 20% discount to customers with 5% donated to Feeding America with universal code, TOGETHERAPART. Thank you for all your support so far! If you have an online store and are interested in getting involved, We are welcoming more brands to join! Please email info@whimsyandrow.com to be part of our Small Business Alliance.

We’re also staying on top of the CARES Act to help keep small business owners in the loop. While the act offers a lot of loans, most of us little guys need grants right now -- cash that doesn’t need to get repaid.  Luckily, those are part of CARES.

Here’s what you need to know if what you need is a grant (though loans are available, too!):

IF YOUR 8-WEEK PAYROLL IS MORE THAN $10,000:

Payroll Protection Program (PPP)

  • The Payroll Protection Program offers grants for up to 8 weeks of your payroll costs.

  • All you have to do is show evidence that you spent the money on payroll, and your loan will be forgiven. Good deal!

  • You can apply for this grant even if you’re a freelancer.  You just need to show evidence of your self-employment income (e.g. invoices / receipts).

How do I get PPP?

  • First, contact your business banker to find out if they are participating:

    • Here is a list of lenders (compiled by a small business friend, founder of OmieLife) as of April 6, 2020, including those that are accepting applications from non-customers.

    • More local lenders who are participating can be found here.

    • We’ve had a good experience with First Republic Bank.

  • If your bank is not giving loans, we’ve identified three national business lenders who will be accepting applications from businesses that are not existing customers -- as of this writing, none are accepting applications yet, but we will update this post as soon as they are!

    • Harvest Small Business Finance — a national small business lender. Once you have submitted, email Michael Sanchez, Senior Vice President at msanchez[at]harvestcrf.com with your name, business name, phone #, loan amount & date submitted. In the comments of the loan application, include “Michael Sanchez” so that he can track your loan status. The minimum loan amount is $20,000.

    • Huntington Bank -- the nation’s largest small business lender.

    • Kabbage is also planning to offer loans and has a user-friendly interface.

  • Here’s what you will need to apply for PPP:

    • Jan - Dec 2019 payroll reports, including wages, payroll taxes, and benefits paid.  If you are a freelancer, collect your income receipts from that timeframe; including 2019 1099-MISC paid to any independent contractors.

    • PPP application. Calculate the total for which you will apply, which is 2.5X your average monthly gross payroll, taxes, and benefits expenses for 2019.

    • IRS Form 940 for 2019 or IRS Forms 941 for 2019.

    • Articles of incorporation.

    • Other required documentation may depend on the lender -- Kabbage is a good example!

  • Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Worried that funds may have already run out, or that someone else needs it more?  Apply anyway. Congress will most likely keep authorizing funds, so don’t give up!

  • Questions about PPP?  This is your definitive source of answers.

  • Got 35 minutes? This webinar gives you the nitty gritty about the PPP payback conditions, setting up a separate bank account for the PPP funds, and more.

IF YOUR 8-WEEK PAYROLL IS LESS THAN $10,000

Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL)

  • This gives you an immediate forgivable loan of $10,000 that can be used on most business expenses.

  • You can apply for up to $2M in loans for through the program, but only the first $10,000 is guaranteed to be forgiven.

  • You can apply here.

  • You can apply for both EIDL and PPP, but the PPP loan will be subtracted from your loan forgiveness amount, so it only makes sense to apply for one or the other if you need a grant, not a loan.

Of course, if you are comfortable taking on debt, you can apply for up to $2M through EIDL -- it has a 3.75% interest rate and you’ll have 30 years to repay it. You can apply here.

We are sending all our small business friends good vibes and good luck -- together we’ll get through this!

*We will update this blog post as we learn more.

Mom-Magical-Launch-Zoe-Larkin-Photo-94.jpg

Thanks again to Pippa & Co. and Daydream Society for coming together on such a wonderful event! Missed this one? You're in luck! We're having another launch party Saturday, May 12th at Tantrum in San Francisco. Check out the Facebook event for all the details.

My Mom is Magical Book Launch

We’re bringing our sunny and punny illustrations and our favorite mythical creatures to a new medium… children’s books! My Mom is Magical (available now) and its sequel, My Dad is Amazing (coming soon) are our favorite new Hello!Lucky products! And look out, because soon, we’ll have our corresponding cards on our letterpress site!

DSC08668.jpg

We love the fact that children’s books usually teach simple but profound life lessons. Often these are the basic things that we forget as we grow up—things like being kind and caring—but that are key to leading a happy, fulfilled life. It is so much fun to revisit these ideas through the eyes of children! Children and parents both benefit from reading them.

We also love that children’s books have to be both entertaining and emotionally true to keep a child coming back to read it again and again. It’s a super-fun challenge to come up with ideas that are fresh, inspiring, funny, and deep at the same time.

DSC08645.jpg

The inspiration behind My Dad is Amazing and its counterpart, My Mom is Magical, is the relationship and bond between parents and young children. Kids idolize their parents—they are these huge, magical, larger than life figures in a child’s life. Yet, parents often feel anything BUT magical—they are often anxious and haggard from juggling all their responsibilities. We wanted to affirm to parents how wonderful and inspiring they truly are, as well as help kids cheer their parents on! At the end of each book, kids get to hear from their parents that they are magical, too, which is a great sentiment right before bedtime. In short, these books are intended to be a big warm fuzzy to parents and kids everywhere. (Aww.)

Find out where to get your own copy here!

If you're local to the Bay Area, we'd love to catch you at one of our two My Mom is Magical events! Save the dates- May 5th @ Pippa & Co in Berkeley 1-3pm, and May 12th at Tantrum in Richmond 12pm-2pm.

Be the Change Launch Party

We were beyond thrilled to be joined by so many amazing moms, girls, friends and fans last week at our Be the Change launch party! Thank you to all who came out to celebrate with us.

Be-The-Change-Zoe-Larkin-Photography(69).jpg

We started out our celebration at the SF-Marin Food Bank, where volunteers donned stenciled FEED THE CHANGE aprons.  We sorted thousands of pounds of apples and bagged rice under the expert supervision of the fantastic and friendly Food Bank staff (plus awesome 80’s jams!)

Be-The-Change-Zoe-Larkin-Photography(112).jpg

We then headed over the gorgeous Dependable Letterpress print shop in San Francisco’s historic Dogpatch district, just a short walk away from the food bank, for the party.  If you’re ever in SF, be sure to check it out! Letterpress printing was one of the original means for amplifying creative civic action back in the late 1400s. Before then people wrote things out by hand so it was hard to spread the word quickly about new ideas!  Martin Luther was one of the first activists to make major waves; the recently invented printing press was used to distribute his 95 Theses bulletin calling for the reform of the Catholic church, far and wide, bringing about the Protestant Reformation!

Be-The-Change-Zoe-Larkin-Photography(43).jpg

Dependable Letterpress owner Joel Benson demonstrated printing a poster we designed of this famous Albert Einstein quote:

Be-The-Change-Zoe-Larkin-Photography(142).jpg

Girls, moms, and fans joined to create their own protest posters (which are now available on the WalkWoke app!) and postcards printed by Mixbook using awesome Sakura pens.

Be-The-Change-Zoe-Larkin-Photography(82).jpg

Sabrina and Eunice signed books and gave a brief author talk about the inspiration behind Be the Change.  We could not be more grateful for and inspired by everyone’s enthusiasm for Be the Change!  This project has been a huge labor of love and our way of giving back to the world. We hope it can inspire an entire generation of girls to be creative changemakers!

Be the Change Launches Today

BTC_Love+Wins.jpeg

Happy International Women’s Day! We're so excited to announce that our latest book, Be the Change: The Future is in Your Hands, is officially LIVE today!

We created Be the Change to give young people—especially girls—the tools to use their creativity to turn their values, dreams, and hopes for their communities into tangible action for change.

Be the Change is inspired by our confidence in young people to make a difference, evidenced by the current groundswell of powerful teen activism.  Be the Change inspires youth to use their creativity to connect, unify and amplify their change actions to create a better world.

As teens, we didn’t realize the power of our own creative voices, and we didn’t see a connection between creativity and social impact.  At the Women’s March on Washington, we woke up. Those creative protest posters, songs, and speeches MADE the march!

Be the Change draws on our years of experience as creatives, activists, and leaders. We cover what it means to be the change from within, what it means to be creative (it's not just being good at art!), and how to turn inspiration into action. We also provide 16+ fun, easy, hands-on projects for everything from t-shirts to protest posters, bumper stickers, fundraiser invitations, and campaign posters to run for student office!

You can pick up a copy at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indie Bound, Chapters, or your local bookseller.  Or get a signed copy here or on Tuesday, March 13 at our all-ages launch party, featuring letterpress demo, author talk, protest poster making for the National School Walkout on March 14 and much more. Can't make it? Try to pop into any Ritual Coffee location in San Francisco this week to pick up a copy of Be The Change, and enjoy coffee out of our limited run Stay Woke cups!

A portion of proceeds from Be the Change will be donated to WE Schools, part of the WE movement, which empowers young people to take action on local and global issues that spark their passion and gives them the tools to make a difference.

Be sure to head over to the Be the Change website if you want more information about the book.

How to Use Stationery to Build More Family Time

Zoe-Larkin-Photography-Happy-Mail-Launch-71.jpg

Stationery and letter-writing isn’t just for adults. It can be a fantastic way to build in more family time with the kids as well. So here are a few tips and tricks on how to use stationery to spend more time as a family.

  • Have a monthly letter writing night to encourage your kids (and yourself!) to reach out to extended family. Write thank you notes for gifts they may have received or write letters to say hello to family you haven’t seen in a while. Setting time aside each month will show your kids just how important keeping in touch with family is, even if you can’t see them all the time.

  • Use Hello!Lucky’s Happy Mail Book to inspire letter-writing craft projects for your family. It’s a great tool for ideas and also includes tons of pre-made postcards. Your kids can follow along with the DIY projects while having a productive creative outlet.

  • Write letters to your future selves. This is a fantastic way to develop writing skills while giving your family a chance to think about the future. Decorate them with doodles, hand lettering, and a few photos of what you all look like now. Then save them to be read at the end of high school, college, or 20 years from now!

  • Use Hello!Lucky’s Be the Change Book to encourage your family to become more aware of social issues. The book includes over 16 different creative projects for civic and community action that you and your family can participate in together.

So schedule a family night (or a few!) for letter-writing and craft time to get the creative juices flowing. Your kids will love the activities, and you’ll get some much needed family time.

Three People to Write a Letter to Today

Zoe-Larkin-Photography(7).jpg

Valentine’s Day always has us thinking about loved ones and the people that matter most in our lives. So after you’ve finished sending messages to your parents, significant others, and close friends, here are three people you should also write a letter to today.

  1. A teacher from your past that made a big impact on you. Whether they helped you figure out what you want to do in life or helped you get through a tough time, it’ll make their day to get a quick note from you thanking them.

  2. A childhood friend you haven't talked to in a while. It’s the perfect time to reach back out to a friend from you past and catch back up. Plus a written letter will mean so much more to them than just a quick Facebook message.

  3. An extended family member you may not see very often. It’s so easy to forget about extended family when the holidays are over, but maintaining family relationships is super valuable. So send a hello to an aunt or an uncle and let them know you’re thinking about them.

So while you’re enjoying some Valentine’s Day chocolate or just hoping the day will pass quickly, take some time today to write three people you wouldn’t normally consider.

5 Ways to Show You Care this Valentine’s Day

Love and Friendship NYNOW.jpg

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, here at Hello!Lucky we’re already thinking about ways to show our friends and family just how much they mean to us. We’re thinking outside of the box this year with five creative ways to show that we care.

  1. A handmade coupon book to our significant other filled with back rubs, date nights, and chores they don’t like doing. That way the gift keeps giving well beyond Valentine’s Day

  2. For a week leading up to Valentine’s Day, cut out little hearts and tape one every day to your children’s, roommate’s, or special someone’s door. Write things you love about them or things you admire. They’re like real life conversation hearts tailored perfectly for the one you love.

  3. Send Valentine’s day cards to more than just your sweetheart this year. Send them to friends you haven’t seen in lately, relatives, and anyone who could use some extra love this time of year.

  4. DIY construction paper Valentine’s like when you were a kid! Grab markers, crinkle-cut stickers, glue sticks, and get to crafting! You’ll love to get messy and creative while your loved ones will love the personal touch.

  5. Make festive treat jars with mason jars and your special someone’s favorite treat. Decorate it with ribbon and a card saying just how “sweet” they are!

Make this Valentine’s Day special with one of these easy, creative ways. You’ll love doing something extra for the holiday, and your family and friends will know just how much they mean to you.

Keeping Friends with Happy Mail

980_friends_forever.jpg

It’s not what we have in our life, but who we have in our life that matters.

When Eunice and I were growing up overseas, we moved every few years.  That meant making new friends and then leaving them. Again and again.

Luckily, we used hand-written letters to keep in touch. Yes, that was before social media, but hang with us.  Today, some of those old friendships are some of our deepest.  And, we still have the old letters we wrote and received from friends -- re-reading them reminds us of who we were then, and how far we’ve come, together.

That’s part of what inspired us to write our latest book, Happy Mail.  We wrote it to inspire girls and women to express and share their creativity with their friends.  The process of sharing what we’ve created with the people we love most is exhilarating.

By creating, we can find and develop our true voice.  That’s empowering.

And by sharing what’s in our heart, made with our own hands, we invite people to see us for who we are. That’s empowering, too.

Many years later, it’s still those friends we once wrote letters and cards to when we were girls, who make our lives matter.

Here’s to friends, and to Happy Mail!

Happiness Is Power!

When people ask us what we do for a living, they are often surprised to hear we make greeting cards.  “Do people even send those anymore?” they ask (or we know they want to ask! heheh).

It’s like being creative, cultivating happiness, and spending time to take care of relationships (which is what cards and letters really are all about) might somehow frivolous.

We're happy to say that it is anything but!  As 75-year Harvard Medical School study cited by Sunshine Parenting shows that "good relationships”—not wealth, status, or privilege—“keep us happier and healthier.”

When we went to the Women’s March and made our protest posters in January, it was because we believe we need keep our relationships strong and stay positive -- as Americans, as girls and women, and as human beings, regardless of where we are on the ideological or political spectrum.

What we’ve learned since then is that envisioning a positive future for America begins with each one of us. We have to see it to believe it. And we have to believe it to see it.

What does that look like?

That vision begins with taking care of ourselves, and our friends and neighbors.

It means taking the time and space to be creative. When we make space to focus and create, rather than get distracted and react, we find get grounded and are able to imagine new possibilities for ourselves and for our world.

It means treating ourselves and one other with empathy, respect, and civility.  For this, we love P.M. Forni’s 25 Rules of Considerate Conduct.

It also means not being intimidated by fear, incivility, and negativity.

It means focusing every moment on making the world more positive, happy place.  Because happiness is far from superficial. It is powerful.

That’s a big part of why we wrote our new book, Happy Mail (you can pre-order it here).  Happy Mail is aimed at helping girls and women slow down and take the time and care to discover their creative power and share that power with their friends.  Why?  Because a strong social fabric has to be woven one strand -- one friendship -- at a time.

One day soon, there will be a woman president and more women in leadership roles (we've already made amazing strides, let's not forget!).  Strong female leaders are going to be confident, creative, positive, generous, caring, and have a good sense of humor (because if you’re truly confident, you can laugh at yourself and make others laugh, too!).

So we invite you to start discovering and empowering your own creative voice now. Learn how to nurture and maintain deeper relationships with your friends, neighbors and fellow citizens, in person and and social media.  If you do, not only will you have stronger friendships, you'll be happier and healthier, too!

And who knows?  With courage, creativity, and persistence, someday the next president might be YOU. :)
