Real Wedding: Bailey and Erik

Weddings at the Bear Flag Farm can never disappoint. The beautiful couple Bailey and Erik said their vows among some of the most breathtaking scenery, and their wedding details were just as perfect. Our Lavender Harvest invitation suite was a nice introduction to the event, especially because of the lush lavender field nearby.

In addition to the crazy gorgeous location, Bear Flag Farm also coordinated the design and florals for the event. The succulents add a deep texture to these cheerful bouquets, making them a lovely addition to the decor.

It was important to the couple that fresh, delicious foods were incorporated into their big day. With cuisine by Alex's Catering in Vallejo, everything was complete!

Congratulations Bailey and Erik! To view more images of their wedding, head over to Style Me Pretty.

Valentine's Cards for Meals on Wheels

Our employees love to get together after hours for holiday craft nights, especially if they benefit a good cause. Meals on Wheels has been providing meals to seniors since 1940 and has evolved into an extraordinary foundation for fighting hunger. For holidays the good people like to deliver cards to the seniors as a gift of love, and this year we decided to join in. All of our cards were handmade with love for the people supported by Meals on Wheels, and to know they were going to a good home was a beautiful thought.

As stationers, paper is our primary medium, so coming up with materials was a cinch. We try to save as many scraps as we can, knowing that they could come in handy for a card-making craft night.

Our team is the best at coming up with witty one-liners. We loved this "I a door you" card.

DIY Valentine's Day Geo Heart Bulletin

Our next DIY doesn't just have to make an appearance for Valentine's Day. It's a nice addition to any home decor and it's sleek shape would look great year round! Geometric shapes are trending around the blogosphere lately, and we're really into the look. This DIY Geo Heart Bulletin is fun and functional, and the perfect way to show your home some love. Instructions below!

Materials:

12" x 12" cardboard* (recycle from an old box!), Pencil, Box cutter or sharp scissors, Ruler, 18" x 18" fabric, Spray adhesive, Hot Glue and gun, Foamfast hanger or command hook for hanging

*Make sure your cardboard is 1/4" thick, so pins don't poke through to the back

Instructions:

Step 1. Measure your heart shape. The two long sides are 9", the rest are 4.25". See below for reference.

Step 2. Use your box cutter or scissors to cut out your shape. Discard scraps. Be sure you use a scrap of cardboard or a magazine underneath to prevent cutting your work surface!

Step 3. Apply a thin, even layer of spray adhesive to one side of the heart and smooth on the fabric. Use your fingers to smooth any bubbles. Use scissors to make a slit directly above the point of the heart.

Step 4. Fold the edges of fabric over to the back side. Secure with hot glue, about 1/2" from the edge. Snip any excess fabric off and discard.

Step 5. Voila! These Foamfast hangers or command strips will work well for hanging.

Leave your loved ones a special note on Valentine's Day or use it to pin up special photos. It's lightweight and easy to make!

Real Wedding: Maria and Craig

If you're wedding is inspired by old Hollywood glamor, it's a sure sign it should take place in Palm Springs. Maria and Craig's wedding at the Parker Palm Springs showcases the couple's luxurious taste and fashionable lifestyle. Maria, CEO of SimplyShe wanted her guests to feel comfortable throughout the weekend celebration while still embracing the stylish accents of a grand event. The bold color palette of black, white, pool blue and fuchsia caught our eye when she came to our studio with plans of a custom wedding suite. We're loving the striped table linens and decor.

The Los Angeles Skyline save the dates were letterpress printed in fuchsia ink, and paired with a custom black and white striped liner and pool envelope.

For a more custom invitation, we transformed our horizontal Chandelier wedding invitation into a vertical, double-sided modern glamor piece. The invitations were also paired with a black and white striped liner and customized guest labels.

It doesn't really get much more glamorous than this. The reception room filled with fluorescent pink lighting is just dying for a dance party.

What a beautiful weekend for a beautiful couple. Congratulations Maria and Craig! For more photos head over to Style Me Pretty here!

Our 10 year Anniversary!

It's hard to believe but this year we're celebrating our 10 year anniversary! Who knew such an exciting adventure would jump start from a simple hobby of printing cards on a vintage Vandercook press in 2003. Since then we've overcome lots of obstacles, reached goals we never could have imagined, and built a brand we couldn't be more proud of. We decided to send cards to our fans and loved ones celebrating the new year and our anniversary, along with a punch-out card designed by Eunice herself.

We got some great feedback from our friends around twitter. It's fun to see our cards find new homes!

Thanks to all who have supported us over the past decade! We're so happy you're in our lives and can't wait for what the future will bring! Cheers!

Glitter Ball Centerpieces & Welcome Vanessa!

Hi! My name is Vanessa Mason, you may remember me as the Style Editor at You & Your Wedding and Cosmopolitan Bride magazines here in the UK. I left the world of weddings to have our two amazing babies, Scott and Sienna (now two and a half and eight months) and when Sabrina at Hello!Lucky asked me to be a guest blogger for their gorgeous company, I didn’t have to think twice, I jumped at the opportunity. What an honor! Well, enough about my details, let’s talk weddings! Just before Christmas, Harry Judd and his sweetheart Izzy Johnston tied the knot. As a nod to Harry’s Strictly Come Dancing win in December 2011, they tucked into a cake topped with a glitter ball trophy.

If you like the glitter ball touch, why not take the idea further and use them in vases as table centerpieces? To keep costs low, only place them on the head table in front of the bride and groom and special guests like the best man or your respective parents. The idea works nicely, as the vases are so tall, they don’t interrupt the flow of conversation over the table. They also provide great atmosphere thanks to the lights placed inside them and as the evening falls, the fairy lights reflect pretty twinkling light off the glasses, cutlery and tea lights! Whatever you decide to do for your wedding, just have fun and make it look beautiful!

Suppliers: Silver mirror balls to buy (www.dzd.co.uk), glitter balls to hire (www.eventprophire.com), vases to hire (www.weddingandeventprophire.com), fairy lights to hire (www.partylights.co.uk).

Top of the Mark

This fall we had the pleasure of working with a team at the Top of the Mark at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel for a special photo shoot. As such an iconic hotel with deep San Francisco history, we were thrilled to create a custom skyline invitation for the event. Our San Francisco Skyline is packed with significant imagery, but one thing was missing for this Nob Hill destination. We created a new icon for the mix and included the Top of the Mark peaking above our lovely city by the bay.

If you haven't been to the Top of the Mark, it's a must for visitors and city dwellers. Their views are some of the best in the city, and the bar makes a delicious cocktail.

Can you see the difference? We love having the Mark Hopkins in our Skyline!

These photos by Rien van Rijthoven of Architecture Photography capture the magic of the Mark Hopkins so well. With elegant tablescapes and jaw-dropping views, this venue makes any event a dream.

Thanks to the Top of the Mark for such a fun project and to Rien van Rijthoven for the beautiful images!

Happy Birthday Eunice!

For Eunice's 40th birthday this year she and Sabrina and a bunch of friends rented a cabin in Tahoe among the beautiful wooded forests and fresh snow. It was a relaxing and exciting retreat, filled with laughter and great times. Six families attended the mini celebration, so there was never a dull moment. The kids were loving the snow, and the parents were loving the woodsy getaway from the city.

No winter weekend would be complete without a good sled sesh. Inner tubes and snow toys kept the boys entertained, but even Eunice got in on the fun!

Jude was quite the explorer. Thank goodness his reptile sidekicks made it through all the wear-and-tear of the cold!

After the sun set the families cozied up inside for some warm meals.

Everyone helped keep the place running smoothly over the weekend. Daniel is shown here helping build a fantastic snow fort.

It was hard to leave but the families will definitely make it a tradition. Happy birthday to Eunice! Cheers to another year of health and happiness.

Happy Anniversary London Tube

On January 9th the London Tube celebrated its 150th anniversary! As such an intricate structure with so many historical memories, we had to pay tribute somehow. The Tube logo is one of the main inspirations for our Love London invitation suite! We had to put our own touches on the design, but we love it's classic color palette and bold type.

The Tube hasn't always been as widespread as it is today. This vintage Underground map shows some of the original railways.

Penguin released a coffee table book in 2007 titled Transit Maps of the World. Below is a map showing all the cities that currently have or are planning to build an urban rail system. Pretty impressive! Wouldn't it be nice to be connected to all these countries by train?

Of course we're not the only ones feeling inspired by the London Tube. Other companies are paying tribute to the railways as well. 1210 Apparel created this Hip Hop Roots tee-shirt, connecting all the defining forces of hip-hop music into one crazy tube/tree.

Congratulations to the London Tube! We wish you another 150 years of efficient journey through our second home.

Local Love: Flora Grubb

We could spend days and days wandering around Flora Grubb Gardens, a local nursery and garden supply store located in San Francisco's Bay View neighborhood.

Flora Grubb is so much more than a nursery. It feels like a little haven in the city, full of inspiration at every turn. There's even a Ritual coffee inside so you can grab a delicious beverage and wander around the gardens.

We love the pops of color, huge range of plants, and endless garden ideas we discover when we are there. Flora Grubb is perfect on a sunny day but it's just as nice on a slightly overcast and foggy day as we discovered last time we were there a couple of weekends ago.

If you live in the bay area and haven't been to Flora Grubb definitely go! And if you're visiting you should add it to your list of spots to explore while you're here, we promise you won't regret it.

DIY Valentine's Day Candles

Valentine's Day is definitely one of our favorite holidays to celebrate. Christmas, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July, they're all a blast, but when we're given the thumbs up to decorate with all the pinks, fuchsias and reds we wish, we're overjoyed. Our Love/Valentine's card collection is one of our strongest (especially with the latest additions by Lisa Congdon) and our Big Day Pinterest Inspiration Board is overflowing with hearts and love. But it's really gearing up for the big 2/14 that get's us in the mood. The beauty of this DIY (found and inspired by the ladies at Design Mom!) is that you can use any color of wax, and cut in any shape you want, but we're going all out in hearts and XO's.

Materials: Colored candles or wax, candle wick, toothpicks, double-boiler or two pots, wax paper, small cookie cutters or knife

How To: Step 1. Using a double-boiler melt your wax. If you don't have a double-boiler, just stack one pot on top of anther. Add a little water to the bottom pot and bring to a boil. Rest the other pot on top (without touching the water).

*Try recycling those used or unwanted holiday candles for this project. It's a shame tossing out the bottom half of those delicious apple-pie scented wonders, so throw them in a pot and melt it down for a new facelift. Most wax will melt down well but we recommend you steer clear of beeswax.

Step 2. While your wax is melting, cover a flat work surface with wax paper, and snip your candle wick to about 1" stems. The length will depend on the shape so check your cookie-cutters in advance. You want the wick to reach about 1/3 or half of the way down your shape.

Step 3. After your wax is completely melted, allow to cool. *If you're using a recycled candle, remove any wick or wick stands.

Step 4. Once the wax starts to stick to the side of the pot, or a thin layer of skin forms at the top, you're ready to pour.

Step 5. Carefully pour the wax onto your covered work surface. You want to aim for 1/8 "- 1/4" thickness.

Step 6. Now you need to let the wax cool for about a minute before you start cutting your shapes. You can test the wax before cutting by pressing your finger into a corner. It should be firm but still hold the shape of your finger. You will need to pay close attention so that the wax does not get too firm before you cut.

Step 7. Cut your shapes out of the wax with your cookie cutter and remove excess wax.

Step 8. Carefully drive a toothpick up the center of the wax (about 1/2" - 1" depending).

Step 9. Finally, set your pre-cut wick into the top of the wax, leaving about 3/8" - 1/2" exposed.

Step 10. Allow to dry completely before use. You can reuse the excess wax again by simply melting in the same pot.

*Clean up tips: Allow the wax to completely dry in the pot and use a knife to gently pick it out. If you find there's still residue, boil water in the pot and while still warm, wash with soap and water. If it still doesn't come out, melt the dry wax and wipe with a paper towel, then wash with soap and water.

Marimekko Kids

Watch out crewcuts, these images from Marimekko's kids collection are reaching the top of the cute chart. It's not unusual that we are caught wishing kids clothing came in adult sizes, but once we see those little bodies show off those fashionable threads, they're definitely making a spot on our wish list. Marimekko has always inspired us with their colorful patterns and bold decor, but now that we're seeing more of them in our every day lives, we're even more in love.

And with all the little boys in our H!L family, we're obsessing over their toy car illustrations. Who wouldn't want to trek that backpack to the first day of school next year!?

Visit their beautiful US website right here, and be sure to check out the kids collection here!

Real Wedding: Harry and Izzy

It's not every day that celebrity couples come to us for help designing their wedding stationery. We're always sure to respect a future bride and groom's privacy before their big day, but this wedding was top secret. UK superstars Izzy Johnston and Harry Judd said their "I do's" last month on what was said to be a "the best day ever." It was covered by Hello! Magazine with exclusive photos and information about the event. We don't need exclusive photos to know this beautiful couple must have had a ball.

We recreated Eunice and Daniels's save the date for their own - including wedding bells, pet cats, and musical instruments (Harry is in the British pop band McFly and Izzy is a former member of Escala - an electronic string quartet). You may have recognized this design from our Cut Paper photo save the date, but you can order your own version of this hand-drawn beauty soon. In the mean time, feel free to contact our UK offices at ukinfo@hellolucky.com for more ordering info!

Congratulations to Izzy and Harry. We wish you a lifetime of health and happiness!

New! Lisa Congdon for Hello!Lucky

When Lisa Congdon agreed to do a line of cards with us for 2013 we were beyond thrilled. We love Lisa's colorful illustrations, hand lettering, and imaginative renderings of nature and animals. We think her cards are perfect for any occasion but we're especially excited to launch the line just in time for Valentine's Day. Check out these images of her studio (Taken by Victoria Smith of SF Girl by Bay). No wonder her designs are so bright and cheerful, her space is an inspiration in itself!

We asked Lisa a few questions about her process and what she has in store for 2013:

What is your process like? Does it change with every project?

It does depend. Sometimes I draw things straight from my brain, especially if I am making a simple drawing without much nuance. The cards I did for Hello!Lucky were all things I drew that just came from my imagination. When I paint or draw something more realistic or complex, I find images (photographs) to use as reference, so I can get the proportions and lighting right. Typically, especially in my commissioned illustration work, I make sketches first. And then I move to making the final artwork.

I always start by drawing things by hand. Always. None of my work starts as digital work, even if it ends up as digital work. In the case of the card line for Hello Lucky, I drew the designs in pen on paper, then scanned them and turned them into vector so they could be reproduced as plates for letterpress printing.

What was your inspiration for this line?

I remember I got really simple, straightforward art direction for this line: create designs in your own style around the theme of love. So I brainstormed different sayings that would lend themselves easily to colorful illustration: things like You are My Sunshine, You are my Queen, You Light up My Life. It was really as simple as that! I really enjoyed it!

Do you have a favorite in the collection or do you love them all equally?

I think You Light Up My Life is my favorite! But I like them all.

(My Sunshine, Sailboat Love, Falling for You, Lighthouse)

We loved your 365 days of hand lettering project you did for 2012. Is there a favorite quote/motto you have from that project?

One of my favorites is: "Leap and the net will appear," which John Burroughs is quoted as saying. It's the motto for many things in my life.

What are you currently working on or what's your latest release? Is there a 365 day project for 2013?

I just launched a weekly project for 2013 with Maria Popova of Brain Pickings called The Reconstructionists. It's a a yearlong celebration of remarkable women who have changed the way we see the world. Every Monday in 2013, we'll publish an illustrated portrait (by me) of one trailblazing woman (artist, scientist, writer), along with a hand-lettered quote that captures her spirit and a short micro-essay (by Maria) about her life and legacy. I'm pretty excited about it!

(Queen, King)

Thank you Lisa for being such an inspiration and so much fun to work with! Visit Lisa's website for more lovely illustrations and follow along with her blog here. Shop Lisa's new collection for H!L here!
